Why the Bag for Life isn't Sustainable

We all know that single use plastic bags are bad for the environment, that's why we switched to using bags for life. That's more sustainable, right?

Well... research has shown that "Bags for Life" contain almost three times the amount of plastic as a standard single use plastic bag (Williams, 2020), the Bag for Life is merely exacerbating the original problem that plastic bag usage causes.

Remember when the government introduced a small fee on single use plastic bags? The intension of the charge was to help reduce consumption. To "help" combat the issue, supermarkets began promoting and selling "Bags for Life" - strong, durable bags that last longer than regular single use plastic bags. Though a good idea in theory, in practice this idea has arguably caused more damage than good.

Consumer mentality towards plastic bags runs deeper than picking up a couple 5p bags at the supermarket, the mentality is rooted in a societal flaw, which is the narrative of over - consumption, and not taking accountability for the consequences it causes. uPatchi aims to influence consumer ideology by promoting buying once, and making it last. If society is encouraged to shop this way, then many issues the environment is facing will be reduced; which is ultimately the brands aim.

Want to make more sustainable decisions within your day to day life? Then a great way to start is by avoiding buying single use plastic bags, and bags for life. Remember to always bring your own bags when you go shopping.
